The Outernet, Central London

A cultural public realm at a major London interchange

At St Giles Circus in London’s West End, our landscape design for The Outernet transforms a once-congested interchange into a dynamic cultural destination, where immersive digital screens, a major music venue, and public life converge.

Working in tandem with Camden Council and alongside Orms Architects, we helped shape a coherent and high-quality public realm that reconnects this pivotal junction back into the city. The design places people at its centre, prioritising movement, dwell time, and clarity within an intense and fast-paced urban setting.

The landscape is deliberately calm and understated, yet underpinned by significant technical complexity. Built above deep structures and constrained by underground lines, the scheme required careful coordination and precision. The result is a seamless, elegant surface that conceals the challenges beneath.

Robust paving and integrated lighting establish a strong and legible framework, while moments of seating and subtle planting introduce rhythm and pause. In contrast to the scale and spectacle of the surrounding architecture and digital screens, the landscape provides a composed environment.

By weaving together infrastructure, culture, and movement, the scheme restores civic presence to one of London’s busiest intersections, knitting it back into the urban fabric as a place not just to pass through, but to gather, experience, and belong.

The Outernet is a great example of how landscape architecture can heighten social connection and transform a place,  turning a high-traffic crossroads into a cultural destination that celebrates London’s past and future

“This is the most epic space for storytelling I’ve ever seen.”
