Cambridge CB1, Infrastructure

Urban regeneration

The CB1 development is a transformative urban regeneration project covering 23 acres around Cambridge Railway Station. The area now features vibrant public spaces, green streets, parks and improved pedestrian and cycling connectivity. Historic elements like the Mill were preserved, and artefacts discovered during construction were integrated into the public realm, enriching its cultural character.

As landscape architects for the project from its inception, we prepared the Public Realm and Landscape Strategy for the whole masterplan area, ensuring a cohesive and sustainable design across all the project’s phases. The development incorporates BREEAM Excellent-rated buildings, green roofs, and a huge uplift in biodiversity, supported by an Ecological Conservation Management Plan. Stakeholder consultation involved local residents, the Cambridge Cycling Campaign and disability forums, ensuring the project met community needs and environmental standards.

The CB1 project has delivered significant social and environmental benefits. Key new public spaces, including Station Square, Mill Park and Station Road linear park, offer seating, greenery, and open space that foster community cohesion. A cycle park accommodating nearly 3,000 bikes supports Cambridge’s cycling culture, while sustainable transport options and air quality monitoring have reduced the area’s environmental footprint. Additionally, £30.1 million in Section 106 contributions supported local infrastructure, public realm enhancements, and community initiatives.

“This project exemplifies how urban regeneration can revitalise future city development.”
