Magic Garden to open next Easter
The Magic Garden, an imaginative and playful new garden for families designed by Robert Myers, is to open at Hampton Court Palace just before the Easter bank holiday weekend.
Inspired by the Palace’s rich history and the site itself – Henry VIII’s former tiltyard where the spectacle of Tudor tournaments once played out – the garden is an immersive world, populated by mythical beasts including a 25-metre dragon. Every feature has been designed for discovery and exploration, including towers to besiege, battlements to storm and a secret grotto to hide in.
The journey through the space provides challenges, obstacles and illusions that play with the notions of hierarchy, status and scale. Different levels, slopes, undulating paths, enclosure and perspective all help to maximise the garden’s playful potential, and create atmosphere and surprise.
Our design has created a contemporary garden which embraces the rich historical, cultural and mythical legacy of the Palace to deliver a ‘playable landscape’ that is unique to Hampton Court and a landmark destination within the grounds.
