Exeter Cathedral Green hosts first Christmas market
Exeter Cathedral Green – which Robert Myers Associates redesigned as part of its landscape masterplan for the Cathedral precincts – is hosting its first ever Christmas market this year.
Chief Executive of Market Place Europe, Nick Rhodes said: “We are especially thrilled to be setting up our Christmas market on the Cathedral Green, a very special venue that captures the essence of Exeter.”
Robert Myers Associates’ design always took account of the fact that the Green is an important and well-used public space which has been the focus of life in the city for centuries. Phase 1 of our masterplan was completed in 2011 and included new tree planting, natural stone paving, seats and realigned paths around the Green, as well as the incorporation of artworks including bronze roundels and poetry letter-cut into stone.
The next phase of the masterplan is dependent on the funding of ambitious plans to uncover the remains of the Roman baths which were discovered beneath the Cathedral grounds in the 1970s. The practice is involved in the current bids to funding bodies including the Heritage Lottery Fund.
